Filton Hill School

Phonics at Filton Hill

We teach Phonics using two different schemes at Filton Hill. They are called Jolly Phonics and Letters and Sounds. Letters and Sounds has six phases which the children will work through until the end of Year 2. Phonics is taught from Reception to Year 2 every day for 20 minutes and is then embedded throughout the English and Guided Reading lessons. We also use Phonics to support children who have English as an additional language throughout the whole school. The children are taught in several different ways according to their need e.g. whole class and small group teaching.

Phonics teaching begins in Reception with a mix of Jolly Phonics and the early phases of Letters and Sounds. Jolly Phonics is a fun way to learn the sounds of the letters of the alphabet with pictures and rhymes. When the children enter Year 1 they continue to follow Letters and Sounds learning new and alternative sounds. In Year 2 Phase 6 teaches Grammar and is used as an essential part of English lessons.

At the end of Year 1 all the children sit a national Phonics test and results are given to parents in the end of year reports. We are very proud of our excellent results.

For our parents – When the children start in Reception sounds are sent home so parents can help their child learn the sounds of the alphabet. We also hold an information session during Term 1 so parents can gain valuable information on how we teach Phonics and what each Phase means in Letters and Sounds.
