What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a really effective software tool used to monitor reading. It enables children of all abilities to improve their reading and comprehension skills by guiding them to books at an appropriate level for them. Children take a STAR test to establish their STAR reading level; this test also gives them a reading age. Children then read books within this level – AR books are organised by reading level in the Accelerated Reader in the Key Stage 2 library.

Children take a quiz on the website after reading each book to assess how well they understood it. AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results which the teacher then uses to help the child set targets and ongoing reading practice. Their STAR level is tested termly to see how well they have progressed. The more a child reads, the more quizzes they pass leading to a sense of success and achievement.

Which Books Can the Children Read?

The document below lists all the books in each band on Accelerated Reader. This could be useful when choosing which books to borrow from your local library or thinking about books to choose as gifts, as you could select books which are already on the system. Then your child could do the quiz for this book and earn more points!
